57 Prize-Winning Recipes from H. J. Heinz Co. published in 1957. “$25,000.00 Cook with Ketchup Contest.” Whew, did someone really win that much dough by cooking with ketchup?
If you’re looking for recipes which will help you get more ketchup in your diet, look no further! This strange little cookbook is filled with 57 recipes, which are filled with ketchup. You learn that you can use ketchup on pretty much everything. From Minted Lamb Shanks, to Liver Loaf. Almond Chick-up to the Country Captain. Heck, you can even make a Pink Peach Sundae with ketchup. Woo hoo!
As you can see from the cover, this cookbook has some classic vintage food photography. The images are well lit, but the food is indiscernible for the most part. The real charm to this vintage cookbook are the illustrations. The book is filled with classic cartoon styled illustrations of happy smiling people & vegetables. (See the next week’s post for an example.)
The recipes are… filled with ketchup. Every last one of them. I’ll admit that some do look good, and some might be okay without the ketchup. Don’t get me wrong, I love ketchup, but not on peaches, or in cakes, or in some of these other recipes. I will try the Sloppy Joes recipe, but will probably skip the Minced Ham and Bean Sandwiches!
