Cutco Cook Book
Cutco Cook Book, World’s Finest Cutlery, published in 1961 by Cutco, a division of Wear-Ever Aluminum. This is such a cool vintage cookbook! The illustrations inside are just fantastic, as you can see below. It also has great black & white photos showing various cuts of meat which help make it easier to identify cuts of meat when you are shopping.
Being a knife company, you’ll also find information on various kitchen knives and where to use them. There are temperature & time charts for all types of meat and poultry, as well as plenty of information on how to cook meat.
And of course there are recipes! Plenty of great looking recipes, including many classic dishes. There are also the “variety meat” recipes which you almost never find in cookbooks today. Variety meats, in this case, are internal organs, brains, tongue and such goodies. I know that stuff sounds creepy to many, but I respect the fact that all parts of the animal were being used back then (and perhaps to this day.) These days I would be more than worried about eating organ meats or brains from industrial feedlot (CAFO) animals. But… these parts from sustainably raised, grass fed, and free of hormones/antibiotics/chemicals… that is a different story. I recently tried liver for the first time in decades, and only because it came from completely free-range, 100% grass-fed bison and from a rancher I’ve come to know and trust.
But I digress and shall step off my local, sustainable food soapbox.
Cave people! Woo hoo! Yes, this fantastic vintage cookbook even has cave people in it! While I didn’t see recipes for ol’ dino (I mean dinosaurs, and NOT Dean Martin!), there are many outdoor cooking recipes which look mighty tasty.
I just love this cookbook and as of this writing, have two copies. Check the Shop to see if I still have one for sale. Both copies I own have some cover issues. This has some water damage, the other has a big sticker stuck on it from the clueless antique dealer I bought it from. Note to antique dealers… STOP putting stickers on items which are impossible to remove!

The stickers bug me too. The people who did my mother’s estate sale, unbeknownst to us, used stickers and MASKING TAPE. I brought home some things that didn’t sell, and one of the awful things they had done was taping pairs of old leather gloves together with masking tape. Of course it ruined the gloves when I took off the tape. I don’t know if old leather gloves sell well at estate sales anyway, but they certainly don’t if you ruin them first.
