The Sealtest Food Adviser
The Sealtest Food Adviser, Spring 1939, is more than a cookbook, yes, it is a food adviser! The cover shows a scale model of the Sealtest Building from the New York World’s Fair, and WOW is it cool! Inside, there are a number of recipes and, hmm… well there isn’t a whole lot of “advising” going on, mostly recipes.
There is “I’ll take MILK”, a short article by a Professor R. B. Stoltz of Ohio State University, where he professes his love for milk. Purely platonic and scientific, of course. He states that “The 130 million people, who live in the United States, do not realize how milk conscious we are.” And I love this one; “For an experiment, ask some of your friends, who are especially fat, if they are milk drinkers. You will find in many cases that they do not drink milk.” Wow, “who are especially fat”! Rather un-p.c. of him. Well, I couldn’t ask any friends who are especially fat because all of my friends drink milk, but I have noticed such people at fast food places, and it is true, they were not drinking milk. This guy may have been on to something.
As fun as the old professor is, I think the best part of this cookbook, er, food adviser, is the intro. Here is part of it: “The Sealtest Theme Hall for the WORLD of today! A thrilling adventure in progress… a zestful crystallization of the dreams of modern men… a trip teeming with new discoveries! Well, it’s mighty hard to sum up the wonders of this new York World’s Fair!” Damn, I wish I could’ve been there!
