My Best Meat Recipes – Vintage Cookbook
My Best Meat Recipes compliments of the National Live Stock and Meat Board, published in 1945. This is a prime example of why I started collecting vintage cookbooks… look at that cover art & design! Wonderful illustration, nice fonts, and wacky “badge” that the book title floats in. The woman and meat dish have a somewhat 3 dimensional feel, while the table is 2D. She is serving dinner, yet looking over her should at you, the “dinner guest”. Very nice and engaging cover design, draws you right in.
Inside the booklet, there are very few illustrations except for spot illustrations of a woman serving, or taking food out of the over. No food photos either. The book does offer excellent illustrations of cuts of meat, and where they come from. This diagram of “Beef Cuts” is one example.
The recipes mostly sound like halfway decent recipes, although I do wonder about “Jellied Beef”. That seems a little out of my comfort range. While the title may make you think this cookbook is all about meat, it also has some pastry, quick bread and cookie recipes. (But nothing in the vegetable realm.)
I first found out about this cookbook in a retro cookbook article in either Saveur or Bon Appetit magazine. When I saw the cover art, I knew I had to find a copy, and did on eBay!
